From New York Times bestselling author Livia Blackburne and illustrator Julia Kuo, here is I Dream of Popo. This delicate, emotionally rich picture book celebrates a special connection that crosses time zones and oceans as Popo and her granddaughter hold each other in their hearts forever.

I dream with Popo as she rocks me in her arms.
I wave at Popo before I board my flight.
I talk to Popo from across the sea.
I tell Popo about my adventures.

When a young girl and her family emigrate from Taiwan to America, she leaves behind her beloved popo, her grandmother. She misses her popo every day, but even if their visits are fleeting, their love is ever true and strong.

New York Times–bestselling author Livia Blackburne wrote her first novel while researching the neuroscience of reading at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then, she’s switched to full time writing, which also involves getting into people’s heads but without the help of a three tesla MRI scanner. She is the author of the Midnight Thief and Rosemarked duologies. Livia was born in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to Albuquerque, NM when she was five. After a twelve year stint at Harvard and MIT, where she earned a AB in Biochemical Sciences and a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, she moved to Los Angeles, where she now lives with her husband and daughter. In her free time, Livia likes to karaoke, dance, and dabble in martial arts.

Dear Asian media access Representative,

My name is Livia Blackburne. I am a Chinese American writer from Los Angeles. I hope this strange season finds you healthy and well.  I am writing to let you know about something that might be of interest to your organization.

I’m the author of a picture book called I Dream of Popo, published by Macmillan, about a young girl who immigrates to California from Taiwan and her relationship with the grandmother she leaves behind. When I was growing up, I had a hard time finding children’s books written by and about Chinese people, so I’m grateful to have the opportunity to publish this story. Not only is I Dream of Popo written by a Chinese author, but the illustrator Julia Kuo and the editor Connie Hsu are also Chinese American, giving the book a truly authentic perspective. My hope is that Chinese American children across the country will get the opportunity to see themselves  reflected in the story, and that the book will serve to honor and preserve our Chinese heritage for the next generation.

Here’s a bit more information about the book. Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus magazine have both given it starred reviews, which they reserve for books of exceptional merit. https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250249319

To celebrate the book launch, we are planning a Zoom panel hosted by Once Upon a Time Bookstore on January 10, 2021 to discuss the Chinese immigrant experience, the nuances of growing up between two worlds, and how linguistic and geographic distance affects family relationships.

If you think this is something that your membership might be interested in, we would love to send you more information.  Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Livia Blackburne
